Buying an electric car in America in 2026 looks different than two years ago. Three big things changed: prices fell, the federal incentive ended, and charging plugs finally share one standard.

Prices fell by thousands of dollars

New EV prices in America dropped. Hyundai cut the Ioniq 5 by over US$9,000 for 2026 — the cheapest trim is now US$36,650. The cheapest Tesla Model Y is US$39,990 and the Model 3 US$36,990. The Chevrolet Equinox EV starts at US$34,995, and the three-row Kia EV9 at US$54,900.

The US$7,500 tax credit is gone

The federal tax credit expired in the summer of 2025. Makers answered with direct price cuts — which is why the prices above sit far below last year's. Don't wait for a "new incentive" that isn't on the table.

One plug: NACS

Almost every new EV now carries a NACS port (the Tesla plug) and can use Tesla's Supercharger network. The Ioniq 5, EV9, Equinox EV, and Mach-E all support it. Checking Supercharger coverage on your daily routes matters more than memorizing power figures.

Which models sell?

The Tesla Model Y remains untouchable (about 163,000 units in the first half of 2026). Outside Tesla, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 leads with 20,730 units, followed by the Equinox EV (16,249) and the Mustang Mach-E (11,632). All three make sense for first-time buyers: priced below America's US$50,000 average new car, with wide service networks.

Used is worth a look too

Used EV sales are climbing to records — a thrifty route if new prices sting. Have a dealer check the battery health before buying.
